Is It Okay for Men to Masturbate?
Yes, it is okay for a man to masturbate, but it depends on why he’s doing it and how often.
There’s nothing wrong with releasing built-up semen.
In fact, studies have found that regular ejaculation is good for prostate health.
Harvard Study
This study followed nearly 30,000 men over 14 years. It found that men who ejaculated 21 or more times per month had a 31% lower risk of developing prostate issues compared to those who ejaculated 4–7 times per month. Importantly, the study included all forms of ejaculation: Sexual intercourse, masturbation, and nocturnal emissions. The results held up even after accounting for other lifestyle factors and the frequency of PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) testing.
You don't need to ejaculate that regularly, but it shows that ejaculation is good for your health.
So, if a man isn’t having regular sex with a woman (or women), masturbation can be a normal and healthy way to maintain prostate health.
Where it can become a problem is when a man starts relying on masturbation (especially with porn), as a way to avoid real-life interactions with women.
Why Too Much Masturbation Can Become a Problem
-
It can give him a false sense of satisfaction: He feels like he’s already achieved something just by releasing sexual energy, so he loses the motivation to go after real results with women.
-
It can dull his desire for real women: The more he watches it, the less he feels excited by real women and the more women feel like “too much effort.”
-
It can slow down his development as a man: Being with a real woman levels a man up mentally and emotionally. He learns how to be more confident, how to remain emotionally strong, not become insecure and how to handle his natural opposite as a human being.
-
It can ruin relationships: Some men in relationships use masturbation to avoid the risk of rejection from their woman, especially if she’s turned him down a few times. Instead of stepping up and leading with confidence, he retreats and uses masturbation to avoid the problem. Yet, the problems between them continue to exist and usually become worse, often leading to cheating or a breakup.
- It can chip away at his masculinity: He gets used to taking the easy way out and over time, it shows in his energy, his confidence and his success with women.
So, yes, masturbation is okay, but only when it doesn’t interfere with a man getting the results he wants with real women.
